Training and background
John L. Smith, DDS, MS, is a periodontist providing care for gum disease, gum recession, and dental implant concerns. He earned his DDS and a master’s degree in Microbiology and Immunology at Virginia Commonwealth University and his certificate in periodontology at Stony Brook University. His published research on laser applications in antimicrobial treatment was selected as a finalist in an American Academy of Periodontology research competition. He also contributed to published dental sleep medicine research with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. At Stony Brook, he served as chief microbiologist for a Colgate study and helped develop the digital dentistry program, with an emphasis on surgical guides. A Virginia native, Dr. Smith experienced life in communities across the United States through his father's service in the U.S. Army. His commitment to service includes volunteer work at free clinics and overseas dental care in Mongolia, Mauritania, and The Gambia, including five visits to The Gambia.
